CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Henry Ellis Gainey, 48, was arrested Thursday for assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery and breaking and entering, police said.
Police said Gainey knocked on the door of the home of William Graham, 83, and Elma Caldwell, 82 and forced his way in after Graham recognized him from the neighborhood and told him he could not come in. Caldwell told Gainey to leave the residents and the suspect picked up a knife and went after Caldwell.
Authorities said Graham struggled with the suspect and was cut in the hand and arm during the scuffle. Gainey fled the scene after stealing cash from Graham.
Neighbors chased after Gainey and held him down until police arrived. According to police there was a scuffle between the neighbors and the suspect, resulting in Gainey receiving minor injuries.
Police arrested Gainey and took him to Carolina Medical Center where he later escaped a few hours later. The suspect was recaptured a few minutes later and taken back into custody.
Gainey is currently being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
