Charlotte population up 35 percent since 2005

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The city of Charlotte's population grew more than 35 percent since 2005.

That increase pushed the Queen City to the 17th largest city in the nation with 731,424 residents estimated in 2010.

Charlotte has more people than cities like Washington, D.C (24); Denver (26) and Las Vegas (30), according to the U.S. census.

The gender breakdown of the city's population is 51 percent female (377,913) and 49 percent male (353,511). The median age is 32.7.

Raleigh finally made the Top 50 this year, coming in at No. 43 with 403,892 residents estimated.

Charlotte is the second-largest banking center in the United States, and two of the nation's top banks, Wachovia and Bank of America, are headquartered in uptown.

Charlotte will host the 2012 National Democratic Convention.
