Czech hospital shooting: 6 killed after gunman opens fire; suspect dead, officials say

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic — Czech Republic police said a shooter opened fire at an Ostrava hospital, killing six people Tuesday morning.

Update 3:17 p.m. EST Dec. 10: The man who opened fire was identified as a 42-year-old man with a criminal record, The Associated Press reported. His name was not released. Police said the man used an illegally owned Czech-made 9mm gun. The man acted alone, police said.

Update 5:18 a.m. EST Dec. 10: The suspect accused of fatally shooting six people at Ostrava's University Hospital has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

In a Tuesday morning tweet, Czech Republic police said they located the vehicle of the suspect, identified only as a 42-year-old man. The man "shot himself in the head as they approached," The Associated Press reported.

Original report: According to The Associated Press, the deadly shooting occurred shortly after 7 a.m. local time Tuesday in a University Hospital waiting room, Prime Minister Andrej Babis said in a TV interview.

Czech police later tweeted that they were looking for "a dangerous, armed offender" in a gray or silver Renault Laguna with license plate 9T57401.

No further information about the suspect or victims was immediately available.
