CHARLOTTE — A man has been charged with shooting and killing a 24-year-old man in west Charlotte Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a shooting call at around 1:50 p.m. on Reid Avenue near Caronia Street. At the scene, authorities found Gary Randolph, 24, fatally shot. MEDIC confirmed he died at the scene.

Community members were shocked a shooting happened in front of kids and in broad daylight. One woman said the victim was a community activist and was liked in the community.

Brittney Cash, a neighbor, was sadden to see a life taken in her community.

“Even though I didn’t know the man or anything, but to know that his life is gone. They probably had grandchildren, he probably had a wife, so they’re gonna miss him,” she said.

On Wednesday, officers arrested Marquest Latham, 35, for an unreleased incident. After his interview with investigators, CMPD charged him with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Latham is being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
