SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. — A pair of aerialists in Surfside Beach, South Carolina, say they were threatened by a town employee while performing on the new concrete fishing pier.
Anna Freitag and her friend moved to Surfside Beach because they believed the town’s new pier would be an ideal location for their aerial performances. They typically attract a crowd with their stunts.
Freitag said while they’re normally greeted by the crowd, a town employee recently threatened to cut down their silk.
“It’s like, we’re making waves, but it wasn’t our intention. We’re just hoping that we can continue what we’re doing. Keep smiling about it, and keep bringing smiles to the public’s face too when they see us out,” Freitag said.
Surfside Beach officials are reportedly drafting an ordinance to establish rules for the pier, which could prevent the aerialists from performing and limit the town’s liability in case of an incident.
The situation has prompted town officials to consider new regulations, which could ground the women and limit the town’s liability in case of a mid-air incident.
