CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As police continue to try to determine a motive in the mass shooting in San Bernardino, dozens are expected to attend an active shooter conference in southeast Charlotte Thursday afternoon.
The event, which will be held at the Mint Museum, had already been scheduled before the shooting in California, but what to do in a similar situation is exactly what the host is hoping to inform people about.
SAF Technologies is hosting the private event and security officials will talk about trends and precursors to violence issues.
A first grade teacher from Sandy Hook Elementary, credited with saving all 15 of her students in Newtown, Connecticut three years ago, will also be speaking.
Security experts told Channel 9 you should have a plan for active shooter situations.
"If you work in a business have a plan,” said Dr. Mike Clumper, president of Threat Suppression. “What would you do, and sometimes you just have to have a conversation with co-workers. If someone burst in what would we do?"
Clumper said to always be aware of your surroundings and always have a plan should an active shooter enter wherever you are. He is also a firm believer in active shooter drills and said people should practice what they’d do in the event of an attack.
