CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Action 9 helped a Charlotte landlord get answers from Mecklenburg County after a tree crashed on her home.
When Joyce Mu needed to hire a contractor to fix her broken meter, she ran into more problems.
"So he put this meter on illegally, charge me $300," she said.
She said the contractor who did the work turned out not be licensed and couldn't get it inspected.
Mu said she found the contractor on Craigslist. She said he told her he was licensed. After she confronted him, he referred her to someone he said was licensed.
Mu said the second contractor, Todd Williams, charged her $250 more, but he never got the inspection.
'They just took my money, gone. Every time, I call (and) say, 'Todd Williams, where is my money and where is the job?' He totally ignored my message," Mu said.
The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to be careful hiring contractors off Craigslist and verifying they have a license and checking references.
When Action 9 got in touch with Williams, he claimed he got busy with other work and said Mu "fell through the cracks."
He sent a text message saying he returned the $250 to Mu's account and apologized.
Mu said she learned a hard lesson.
"Now I learned I do not trust Craigslist anymore. I go to BBB website," she said.
