49er green lit up the Charlotte skyline on the Bank of America and Duke Energy buildings and in Romare Bearden Park in uptown.
The shooting hit the area hard and sparked in increase in the use of the hashtag, #CharlotteStrong, a show of solidarity for all those impacted by the tragedy.
"Hopefully it can kind of counterbalance the fact that it happened and give a little hope to the community," resident Grant Henry said.
"It just shows you that Charlotte is that type of place that even in light of these tragedies, there's always opportunties to be a hero," resident Rashie Minott said.
One UNC Charlotte student is raising money he said he hopes will go toward a memorial on campus.
"I thought that these individuals need something to commemorate them because they didn't ask for this. No one asked for this," UNCC student David Hogg said.
Hogg told Channel 9 he plans to present the money he raised to the school's chancellor.
He said he hopes it can be used for a memorial bench or statue to honor the victims.
