'Batwoman' (but not Batman) to star in DC crossover, and her own potential CW series

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – CW's next potential superhero: "Batwoman."

The network has five superhero series on its fall schedule and is eyeing a sixth in DC Comics' "Batwoman," who will first appear in its annual DC Comics crossover event this fall.

But CW is also developing a potential series built around the character, from executive producer Greg Berlanti, for airing in 2019, network chief Mark Pedowitz told the Television Critics Association Monday.

Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, was reintroduced to DC Comics in 2006 as a lesbian street fighter, and while LGBTQ characters appear prominently in other DC series, if the project becomes a series she would be the first to lead one.

Will Batman show up, too? "Batman already exists in the Arrow-verse,"  Pedowitz said; he was mentioned by Oliver Queen last season on "Arrow." "Batwoman, if the series goes forward, lives in Gotham. But there’s no plans at this point for the character to appear." (A younger version is already center stage on Fox's "Gotham," which is readying a final season).

CW has two new series this fall: "All American," also from Berlanti, about a high-school football player out of his league in Beverly Hills, and a remake of "Charmed." At midseason, "iZombie," "The 100" and the final season of "Jane the Virgin" are among returning shows, to be joined by a remake of another series, "Roswell."
