CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of women have received free mammograms thanks to a nonprofit founded by former Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers star DeAngelo Williams, the organization said this week.

"We have sponsored well over 500 mammograms and have no plans of stopping!" the DeAngelo Williams Foundation, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday.
According to "Today," the foundation started paying for the procedures through its 53 Strong for Sandra program in 2015, one year after the former NFL running back lost his mother, Sandra Hill, to breast cancer. The organization funds screenings for 53 women at each of its events as a tribute to Hill, who was 53 when she died, the outlet reported.
In the past four years, Williams' nonprofit has funded mammograms for patients in Charlotte; Pittsburgh; Memphis, Tennessee; and Jonesboro, Arkansas, "Today" reported.
"I'm trying to help where I can," Williams tweeted Wednesday evening.
