Austin Chaney
Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist
Austin Chaney is the Chief Meteorologist for WHIO and Storm Center 7. Austin returns to WHIO after working most recently as a meteorologist for WHIO’s sister station, WSOC in Charlotte, NC.
Austin loves the weather. Since he was young, Austin has been interested in weather and how it all works. In middle school, he began giving weather forecasts on his school’s morning newscast. Austin was only 12 years old, but he knew then that he wanted to be a TV meteorologist.
Austin attended the University of Georgia where he earned degrees in Atmospheric Sciences and Geography. He interned at WSB-TV in Atlanta, the TV station he grew up watching. Shortly after completing his internship, Austin began his on-air career as a meteorologist in Macon, Georgia at WMAZ-TV. While working in Macon, he earned the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist distinction. At the time, he was the youngest meteorologist to receive the AMS CBM.
After almost 3 years at WMAZ, Austin was ready to take the next step in his career. He joined WHIO and Storm Center 7 for the first time in 2021. He got to experience all of the extreme weather the Miami Valley had to offer. Tornadoes, flooding, heat waves, and of course snowstorms. In addition to tracking storms as a meteorologist, Austin also hosted WHIO’s Touchdown 7 High School Football Highlight show.
In 2023, Austin was promoted to WSOC in Charlotte, North Carolina. Austin returned to WHIO in August of 2023 as Chief Meteorologist. He is excited to lead Storm Center 7 and bring you the weather every night, rain or shine. Austin returns to the Miami Valley with his wife Lily, their two cats Joel and Ridley, and their dog Magnolia.
“I could not be more excited to return to WHIO, and I’m honored to be your next Chief Meteorologist. I’m thrilled to make the Miami Valley my home for years to come.”
