South Carolina interstate fatality rate among highest in US

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Thousands of South Carolina motorists traveling for the Fourth of July holiday will be using interstates that are ranked among the deadliest in the nation.

The numbers are contained in a report from TRIP, a transportation research organization based in Washington, D.C.

A report released this week finds South Carolina's interstate fatality rate is the sixth-highest in the U.S.

During 2014, there were .82 fatalities for every 100 million miles traveled on interstates in South Carolina. New Mexico has the highest rate of 1.26 fatalities for every 100 million vehicle miles.

The report finds the nation's interstates are facing increasing levels of congestion because of more traffic.
