SC Town Seeks Housing Ban For Illegal Immigrants

SUMMERVILLE, S.C.,None — A town near the South Carolina coast is taking up a proposal that would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the community.

The proposed ordinance goes before the Summerville town council on Wednesday.

Councilman Walter Bailey said the ordinance would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town of 45,000 and in most cases keep them from working there.

Bailey is a former state prosecutor and said the idea was prompted in part by the Obama administration's challenge of the new Arizona immigration law.

A federal judge has blocked key aspects of that law but Bailey said his Summerville ordinance is different enough to where he doesn't think the judge's ruling applies.
