CLAYTON, N.C. — Authorities said a North Carolina teen attempted to shoot her mother while she was sleeping.
Clayton police said in a news release that the 15-year-old girl was arrested Sunday and has been charged with first-degree attempted murder.
According to the release, officers were called to a home Sunday morning to conduct a welfare check requested by a friend. Based on interviews with the teen, her mother and father, officers said the mother awoke to a loud noise and saw her daughter standing at the foot of the bed, while the father was in the bathroom.
The parents said the daughter then ran from the room. Officers found a bullet hole in the mattress, close to the mother's head. Police say the girl used her father's handgun.
Police are still investigating.
