Second video emerges of alleged bullying at Bunker Hill High School

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Parents are raising concerns about the safety of students at Bunker Hill High School after they said two incidents have emerged on video of students being bullied. They also want to know if classmates are being paid to do it.

A video posted to Facebook Thursday showed what appears to be a student getting sucker-punched multiple times Thursday at Bunker Hill High School.

The attack, which appears to have happened in the cafeteria, shows a boy sitting by himself at a lunch table when another student comes up and punches the boy in the back and side of the head six times while other students watch.

"I don't care if you're the poorest kid, the richest kid in school. If you lost your mom, don't have a dad from a divorce. You do not have the right to feel unsafe in a school that you go to," said Christy Flewelling who is the guardian of the 14-year-old in the video.

Flewelling became the teen's guardian after his mother died two months ago.

Channel 9 contacted the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, which said officials are aware of the video and are investigating.

Officials said both students involved are under the age of 16.

Deputies said Bunker Hill High School administrators are also aware of the incident.

Investigators are looking into who recorded the video.

Less than 24 hours after that original video was posted of a student being sucker punched repeatedly, a second video has surfaced. It involves a 15-year-old female student attacked from behind and struck by another student with a chair.

The 15-year-old's mother, Narissa Huff, said she believes the school isn't doing enough to keep kids safe.

"Somebody was waiting and recorded it as she was entering so they planned to do it before she even got in the classrom," Huff said.

In both cases, other students recorded the attacks, leading some to believe they were planned out and that more than one teenager was aware of what was about to happen.

One student, who asked that Channel 9 not show his face, said money was exchanged during the most recent attack involving the 14-year-old student.

"It was a bet. Someone bet somebody to start punching him. They bet him $20 to go do it," the student said.

Flewelling wished that other students in the lunchroom had stepped in to help the 14-year-old student.

"Why can't some of these other students standup and tell exactly what happened," Flewelling said. "They knew what was going to happen before it even happened. They were ready with their phones for it to happen."

The school district released a statement saying Catawba County Schools prohibits all forms of bullying, harassment and physical assault and takes these matters seriously, but parents think more should be done to keep students safe.

"I feel like they don't have a lot of protection, said Huff. “I actually was iffy about sending my daughter back to school because the video was shared all around the school. I asked them and they could never figure out who recorded the video."

Channel 9 reached out to the sheriff, who said a school resource officer investigated the assault in the cafeteria and that because both teenagers are under the age of 16, they are now talking with juvenile authorities.

Catawba County School officials released the following statement to Channel 9:

"Catawba County Schools prohibits all forms of bullying, harassment and physical assault and takes these matters seriously. Please be assured that this matter was addressed immediately. Both law enforcement and administration have been contacted and appropriate action will be taken by both law enforcement and administration."
