Good Samaritan saves woman after car catches fire in crash involving big rig

NEWTON, N.C. — A good Samaritan is being hailed a hero for saving a woman from a burning car after a crash involving an 18-wheeler.

The accident shut down Highway 10 near Sigmon Dairy Road in Newton for nearly an hour and a half.

Firefighters said the good Samaritan was gone by the time they got on the scene.

There was damage to three vehicles after police said the tractor-trailer ran a red light.

Makenzie Little was in one of the three vehicles that struck.

She said she could clearly see the fire spreading near the engine of a car, and a man appear out of nowhere to help the injured driver.

Eyewitnesses said one of the cars immediately caught fire from the impact and a woman was pinned inside.

"I don't know who it was, but yes, I saw somebody trying to get her out. It's pretty awesome,” said Little.

A photo taken by an eyewitness shows that good Samaritan holding the fire extinguisher he used to put the fire out.

The witnesses said the man and the truck driver then went to work to get the injured driver out of the car.

"He sprayed it down and put the fire out on this car, but I didn't catch the guy’s name,” said truck driver Paul Demers.

Police and firefighters didn't know either who the mystery man was either.

He left before they arrived.

"Probably a guardian angel and he probably will never be known to that individual that got saved,” said Ruth Hunnings, a driver who saw the wreck.

The driver of the big rig will be charged with running the red light, police said.
