Tree-lighting celebration at NASCAR Hall of Fame draws hundreds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The massive Christmas tree outside of the NASCAR Hall of Fame lit up for the first time this season.

The annual celebration drew hundreds of people Saturday evening.

With the flip of a switch, lights wrapping around the 40-foot-tall tree in uptown Charlotte lit up.

“We continue to add to the decorations and add to the different experiences that folks can have,” said Winston Kelley, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

The event draws lots of families, and racing fans.

NASCAR fan Eric Peacock said the tree-lighting ceremony has become an annual tradition for his family.

“Fun, family atmosphere, family-oriented,” he said. “It's just a good time to come out and hang out."

Peacock said his kids particularly enjoy the free rides and games, but the favorite for many is the ice skating.

“I like the ice skating. It's really fun with all the decorations and the lights,” spectator Cyan St. Clair said.

The event helps kick off the Christmas season in uptown Charlotte for people of all ages.

“It’s been good. It's really happy,” spectator Niara Adija said. “There's a lot of stuff to do out here."

The NASCAR Hall of Fame offers several events this holiday season, including breakfast with Santa and a sensory-friendly event called "Magical Morning" for children living with autism or other special needs.
