Just before noon, school officials announced that the incident was an accidental shooting. Deputies said the student brought the gun to school and accidentally shot himself.
Although deputies said there is no active search for a shooter, law enforcement and district personnel will be at the school to make sure dismissal is safe and orderly.
Deputies cleared the school and did not find any additional threats, WLOS reported.
Southside High was placed on lockdown, while nearby Thomas E. Kerns Elementary has been advised by law enforcement to also go on lockdown.
