STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Statesville police officer in a marked patrol vehicle struck a pedestrian early Saturday morning, officials said.
Officials said Officer Scott Reed hit John Cousins Jr., 59, just after midnight near the intersection of South Center and Bell streets.
Iredell County EMS pronounced Cousins dead at the scene.
Officials said Cousins was crossing the road outside of the intersection and that Reed was driving 30 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Officials said Reed has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol will be handling the investigation.
