Winter Weather Advisories in the mountains were in effect until noon Monday as snow showers continued through the morning.
Temperatures in the mountains did not climb above freezing, but the winter weather created dangerous and icy road conditions which forced Ashe, Avery and Watauga school districts to close Monday.
Ashe County schools announced Monday afternoon, there would be a two-hour delay on Tuesday.
"Everywhere you went you could see snow blowing off everything,” resident Brian Havner said. “Some of the yards looked like they had nothing, but some of the roofs were packed up. The wind was very strong."

Charlotte area forecast
MONDAY: The mountain counties will deal with some snow showers through Monday morning but that system will push out later in the morning. The lows are in the 20s but the wind chill makes it feel like the temperatures are in the teens.
Close to the Charlotte metro area, the story through the day will be the lingering chilly temperatures. Despite the sunshine, temperatures will struggle to warm up to the mid-40s.
LATER IN THE WEEK: A nice warm-up is on the way. Highs will return to to the lower 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday. The next weather maker arrives on Friday with a light rain chance. A better chance for rain moves in on Sunday.
