Crews recover body of 22-year-old who drowned in Catawba River

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Rescue crews recovered the body of a swimmer who drowned in the Catawba River in Gaston County Sunday afternoon, police said.

Officials were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. on Mountain Island Road at Tailrace Park in Mount Holly.

According to police, witnesses said the 22-year-old victim was swimming with another person when he went under the water and never resurfaced. They said he was swimming approximately 50 feet from the bank.

The man was confirmed dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Multiple fire and police departments responded to the scene.
