CMPD identifies man in custody after rooftop standoff with police

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is in custody Thursday after police said he ran from them and climbed onto a rooftop in west Charlotte to avoid arrest.

Officials with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified the man as 35-year-old Tyrone Singleton.

Police said they tried to serve an arrest warrant in connection with domestic charges to Singleton at the Rodeway Inn Motel on Brookshire Boulevard near Rozzelles Ferry Road.

They said he took off and eventually climbed on top of a tire business on nearby Honeywood Avenue.

A neighbor told Channel 9 that police advised her to leave her home in case there was gunfire.

"I walked over there and looked, and the gentleman had hopped from our roof to the tin roof, through the bush and onto the tire place. He was walking back and forth smoking a cigarette," resident Nemessis Woods said.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom captured Singleton on the roof coming dangerously close to the edge.

"He was extremely agitated and officers were trying to get him to come down,” CMPD Maj. Gerald Smith said.

Cameras captured Singleton smoking a cigarette, and at one point talking on his cellphone. Officers said he was talking to a family member.

Channel 9 crews captured images of Singleton climbing down a ladder and being taken into custody by officers shortly before noon.

Smith said officers took their time and were able to talk Singleton down.

Officials said Singleton has outstanding warrants for assault on a female, kidnapping and several other domestic related warrants. Channel 9 is asking if he'll face additional charges.

Channel 9 checked and records show most of those previous charges against Singleton were thrown out by the DA due to lack of evidence and the victim not showing up to court.
