Police identify Lenoir man shot after exchanging gunfire with officers

LENOIR, N.C. — Police in Lenoir used deadly force after responding to a home where more than a dozen shots were fired overnight, officials told Channel 9.

The shooting took place around 1 a.m. on Starcross Road, according to investigators.

Police said they responded to a home on Starcross Road after receiving a shots fired call. When they arrived, they said a man fired a “long gun” at officers, who then returned fire, striking the suspect.

Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty is on the scene gathering more details from investigators, follow him on Twitter for real-time updates.

Officials identified the man who was shot as Harold David Houser III.

Houser is at Caldwell Memorial Hospital listed as stable with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Houser shot into a neighbor’s house before officers arrived on the scene.

A passing vehicle was also shot by Houser, authorities said. Nobody was injured in those incidents.

When Channel 9 arrived on the scene early Friday morning a large police presence was still visible along Starcoss Road, which was still closed.

This isn't the first time police have been called to the home. Neighbors said Houser set someone's trash can on fire and vandalized mailboxes in the area in the past.

Cody Reeves was outside when police fired their weapons.

"Almost like a little war zone in here,” Reeves told Channel 9. “It was pretty wild to hear that right across the street from the house."

Several officers that were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The SBI is assisting with the investigation.
