Police have not identified the victim, only saying he is a black male in his 30s.
Friends told Channel 9 someone shot and killed Darryl Stewart inside his home. They said Stewart was a kind man who looked after his elderly neighbors and helped them with their yard work.
Dot McKee was a close friend, and said she just saw Stewart the day before he was killed.
"I kept asking who? Not Darryl, no it couldn't' be, because I was just talking to him yesterday,” she said. “I couldn't believe that, you know, you're here one minute and then you're gone the next."
Detectives told Channel 9 that there are no suspects at this time, and details of the case are being withheld until the investigation is complete.
Neighbors told Channel 9 they were asleep, and woke up when police cruisers started lining the streets. Police have spoken to quite a few of those neighbors, but said they still need anyone with information to come forward.
"The rumor mill starts flying, or people may actually know information but really weren't there last night,” said Rock Hill police Capt. Mark Bollinger. “But we need the public's help.”
The death is Rock Hill’s second homicide of 2017.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of York County at 877-409-4321.
