CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police identified a man who was hit and killed Monday morning in southeast Charlotte.
Officers were called around 6:30 a.m. to Sardis Road North at Monroe Road to investigate the crash.
George Sumter Jr., 62, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Sumter was pushing a shopping cart across Sardis Road North when he was hit and killed.

The driver stopped and told officers it was dark and she didn't see him. Investigators said Sumter was not crossing at a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing.
Authorities said speed and alcohol impairment were not contributing factors for the driver.
The crash remains under investigation.
