GASTONIA, N.C. — Police arrested and charged a man in connection with a Gastonia man's death early Wednesday morning.

Herbert Lamar Torrence Jr., 28, is charged with first-degree murder in Adrian Woods' death.
Police said Woods, 38, was driving down Oakwood Street when he ran off the road and into a ditch.
He was attempting to push his truck out of the ditch when authorities said he was shot in the chest. Woods was taken to CaroMount Regional Medical Center died of his injuries.

Nearby resident Nellie Reid didn't realize what happened until detectives knocked on her door.
"That must be where it happened, right there," Reid said.
"There has never been any problems here in the neighborhood," said Carolyn Camp, who has lived in the area for more than 40 years.
Woods had a long criminal record. Police are checking to see if that had anything to do with his death. Investigators have not released a motive in the case.
