Arrest made after man hit, killed by truck on I-85 following argument

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have made an arrest after they said a man was killed after being struck by oncoming traffic along Interstate 85 late Wednesday night in north Charlotte.

Officers told Channel 9 that around 10 p.m. two men got into an argument, and that one of them, 46-year-old David Brannon, was hit by a truck in the southbound lanes of the interstate, near Sugar Creek Road.

Brannon was pronounced dead at the scene and police announced Thursday morning that they had arrested 19-year-old Austin Kelligan and charged him with murder.

Channel 9 saw police searching the Sunset Inn after the incident, which is directly across the street from I-85.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim may have been involved in an altercation with a known suspect prior to the collision,” police said in a news release.

Authorities said they were looking at surveillance video to try to get a better idea of what led up to Brannon's death. They think Brannon and Kelligan got into some kind of fight before Brannon stepped out on the interstate and was struck by a truck.

Officers said the two men knew each other.

The southbound lanes of I-85 were closed for hours while police collected evidence.
