CONCORD, N.C. — A Concord street is blocked off while police investigate an early morning homicide, the city's first of the year.
The Concord Police Department tweeted around 6 a.m. that it was in the initial stages of a shooting investigation in the area of Academy Avenue.
Paramedics told Channel 9 that they took one person from the scene to the hospital just after 5 a.m.
Police later told Channel 9 that they found the male victim, 27-year-old Sergio Culbertson, shot several times in the backyard of a home on Academy Avenue.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers believe they know who the gunman is but that person is not in custody.
Academy Avenue was closed between Kerr Street and Ann Street while police investigated.
