One dead after small plane crashes in North Carolina

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — Multiple North Carolina law enforcement agencies are investigating a deadly plane crash and fire in Orange County, North Carolina.

WTVD reports that Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood confirmed a small plane crashed Sunday morning in the Rougemont community.

Sheriff Blackwood tells told WTVD that one person died in the crash.

Blackwood said the plane caught fire and was still burning when first responders arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m.

The plane had taken off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Blackwood confirmed to WTVD.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene and the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to take over the investigation.

Sheriff Blackwood said the investigation is ongoing.
