GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A pickup truck driver died Monday afternoon when a logging truck rolled over onto the truck in Gaston County, Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened at about 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Ferguson Ridge Road near Highway 321 and the road isn't expected to be reopen until 8 p.m.
The pickup truck driven by Robert Jones, 43, of Gastonia was headed north on Ferguson Ridge Road and the logging truck was driving south when they collided, witnesses said.
The driver of the log truck, Daryl Daine, veered across the center line and couldn't get truck back into the correct lane, according to witnesses.
It crashed head-on with the pickup truck and the logs fell onto it.
Witnesses said the pickup truck then burst into flames.
Daine was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Troopers said they are trying to determine what made the big truck cross the center line.
