MONROE, N.C. — A Monroe man was arrested Tuesday for impersonating a law enforcement officer, police said.
Otey Montgomery Crawley Jr., 56, of Carl Polk Road was driving a black GMC Sierra Denali truck on U.S. Highway 74.
Crawley was flashing his lights and had his hazards on when he almost ran a vehicle off the road, police said.
The vehicle pulled into a parking lot and Crawley followed.
Crawley got out of his truck to ask the motorists for a driver’s license, registration and if any drugs were in the car, police said.
The driver’s father arrived at the scene and the suspect said he was Otey Crawley, a retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was on duty enforcing traffic violations in Monroe.
Crawley left the scene before Monroe officers arrived after the father called the police.
Later, a Union County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a city police officer arrested Crawley who, at that time, said he was a state highway patrolman.
Law enforcement checked his records and Crawley had an outstanding order for arrest for driving while license was revoked. He was then arrested.
Crawley faces charges of impersonating a police officer, resist delay and obstructing as well as the charge for an outstanding warrant for driving while license revoked.
