GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The man accused of driving his Jeep into a Bessemer City restaurant, killing two family members in May 2018, pleaded guilty Monday on two second-degree murder charges.
Roger Self and his family went to the Surf and Turf Lodge on North 14th Street after attending church.
Roger Self got up from the table and left the restaurant. That is when police said he plowed the Jeep into the popular eatery where his family was sitting.
His daughter Katelyn Self and daughter-in-law Amanda Self were killed in the incident.
“I didn’t mean to hurt them!” Roger Self said in court after accepting the guilty pleas.

“May 20, 2018 is very real still today,” said Monty Self, Roger Self’s brother.
Monty Self was in court with family members to support Roger Self, a man crumbling under the weight of his decision.
“He is my brother,” Monty Self said. “I love him and forgive him and like I said, it’s one step forward.”
Roger Self’s family members want him to know that they applaud his decision.
Family members sent a Bible to his cell before he took the plea.
“He understands God’s word in relation to all of this,” Monty Self said.
