Mailer misinforms voters on polling location hours

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Walter Hammill came to vote early at the Cabarrus Bank Building in Kannapolis Saturday after getting a mailer paid for by the North Carolina Republican Party, which said it was open for voting from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"I was hoping I'd get here because, I didn't know, you know, things come up -- you run into a wreck, things coming (up) home. You don't know when you make it home on Election Day to vote," Hammill said.

David Ratliff also tried to vote early and said his aunt received the mailer about the bank building being open Saturday as well.

“You know everybody wasted their gas to come up here and that can be discouraging to where some don't come back to vote," Ratliff said.

It was the same situation at Concord Fire Station #9 also listed on the mailer as an early voting site on Saturday. While we were there, about a dozen people showed up to vote. A fire official said he already had turned away at least 50-60 people.

Neither site was open this weekend, according to the Cabarrus County Board of Elections website.

Despite the mix-up voters said they'll be back.

"We did discover a printing error, which we are correcting by re-mailing voters the corrected information and we are also calling these voters,” the North Carolina Republican Party said in a statement after being contacted by Channel 9. “We will continue to work to inform voters of early voting opportunities in their areas as part of our dedication to civic engagement."
