MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County district attorney's office has dropped assault charges against Butler High School's head football coach.
Brian Hales, 43, was arrested in November and accused of assaulting a woman.
A police report said Hales and a 30-year-old woman got into an argument that turned physical. Police said the woman suffered minor bruises and scratches and refused medical treatment.
The DA's office said the case was scheduled for trial on Jan. 6. It said that leading up to the trial, multiple attempts were made to contact the victim. The victim did not appear on the trial date, and without the victim's testimony, the State did not have sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, according to the DA's office.
Hales is in his sixth season at Butler's head football coach. The team won the state championship in 2012.
