Leaders to honor Harding University High's winning football season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County commissioners want to honor Harding University High School’s state championship football team.

Leaders will vote on Wednesday to adopt a proclamation that would designate Jan. 22 – 26 as Harding University High School Week in Mecklenburg County.

The team finished off a 14-1 season with a 30-22 win over Scotland County in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championship game.

The team ran into one big obstacle when it won, which was not being able to afford state champ rings.

Channel 9 reported on a GoFundMe page was set up to raise $20,000 for the team. But less than 24 hours after Channel 9’s story aired, Carolina Panthers defensive linebacker Thomas Davis donated $15,000 so the team could buy all 60 rings for players and coaches.

The team signed thank-you cards for all the donors who stepped in to help them out.
