GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities are trying to find the person who fired several shots into a Gaston County police officer’s home as she was getting off work.
Neighbors described hearing as many as three to four shots being fired around 6 a.m. Monday at the home near Cherryville.
The officer was not hit by the gunfire.
There were also two children inside the home and they were not hurt.
Channel 9 asked police about a possible motive in the shooting and they said they’re working to determine that but do not believe it was domestic-related.
Neighbor David Anthony was stunned to learn about the shooting and said he hopes the officer wasn’t targeted because of her work.
“Here in the country that’s rare. Police are here to help us and protect us. I kind of feel safe with her here,” Anthony said.
Theda Beck heard police scramble to get to her neighbor's home.
"To do something like that in a town like Cherryville,” she said. “Because you don't usually hear a lot here.
Several detectives have been assigned to the case to try and identify the gunman.
