First charges filed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, CNN reports

WASHINGTON — A federal grand jury approved the first charges filed by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to an exclusive CNN report.

The charges were reportedly sealed. Sources told CNN that anyone charged could be taken into custody as early as Monday.

CNN reported in August that the Mueller investigation is including a probe of possible financial ties between Trump, his associates and Russia. Sources, who were not identified, told the news network that officials are also scrutinizing possible attempts by Trump and others to obstruct the FBI investigation.

Comey said during congressional testimony in June that he felt the president tried to pressure him into dropping the FBI's investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn four months earlier. Flynn was forced to resign in February, 24 days into his appointment, after it was revealed that he lied to Vice President Mike Pence about conversations he had with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

The allegation led to speculation that president might have obstructed justice by attempting to influence the FBI probe.

Josh Suteve, a spokesman for the special counsel, told Reuters on Tuesday that former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Greg Andres had joined Mueller's investigative team. Andres is the 16th lawyer to join the team.

Trump has repeatedly denied any accusations of wrong doing, characterizing the numerous investigation into Russian interference in the election and possible collusion by Trump or his associates as little more than a "witch hunt."

Mueller, who headed the FBI from 2001 to 2013, was named special counsel in an announcement on May 17 from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
