Family remembers Charlotte's first homicide victim of 2016

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was shot and killed early Sunday in north Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. It was Charlotte’s first homicide of 2016.

Officers were called at 12:16 a.m. to the 2200 block of Beatties Ford Road. They found a man with a gunshot wound in a parking lot. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police identified the man as Tyrone Matthew Burch, 45.

Officers said Burch and the shooter were involved in a fight that led to the shooting.

CMPD said Shelton Andre Kimble, 47, voluntarily came to police headquarters and was arrested and charged with Burch's murder.

Detectives said Burch and Kimble knew each other and this was not a random act of violence.

Reporter Alexa Ashwell spoke with Burch's family while they gathered at his estranged wife's home Sunday afternoon.

“He was a very loving husband even though things turned out for the worse,” said Tammy Burch earlier that day. “He was a great father to his children.”

Tammy said the two men were at a bar when they got into an argument over another women. She said Burch had recently started dating Kimble's former girlfriend. The fight spilled into the street, where the shooting happened.

Tammy said she found out about his death from her two older children, who are Burch's stepchildren. The couple had been married for 20 years. They also had a son and daughter together.

Burch also leaves behind his father, four siblings and children.

“To get that phone call. To hear about my brother,” said Angela Miller, Tyrone Burch’s sister. “It’s not right. It’s not right at all.”

Miller said she last heard from her brother on New Year’s Eve. He had sent her a text that read, “Happy New Year!”

Residents Channel 9 spoke with were devastated to hear someone had already been killed just days into 2016.

“With the world today, we’ve got to learn to love each other more,” said one woman as she left her church near where Burch was killed.

The family described Tyrone as a hardworking man who owned his own home improvement company. When asked about the suspect, the family said they will hold no grudges.

“We are going to leave it in the Lord’s hands,” said Miller.

Channel 9 went to an address listed for Kimble for comment but was told he did not live there.
