CORNELIUS, N.C. — Emergency officials evacuated an elementary school in Cornelius early Monday morning because of fumes reported inside the building.
Officials evacuated J.V. Washam Elementary School on Westmoreland Road around 8:30 a.m. and CMS officials said fire crews on scene checked for fumes that had been reported in the cafeteria area.

Nobody was reportedly sick and firefighters were investigating the cause of the fumes.
More than 1,000 students waited in the parking lot for more than an hour while the fire department investigated. Some parents picked up their students early.
Students were later allowed back inside.
Officials have not said yet what the fumes were.
