The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the Mercedes that caught fire was speeding when it crossed the centerline and struck a BMW SUV head-on.
Investigators said the Mercedes overturned and caught fire in a field.

Eyewitnesses told Channel 9 the car caught fire immediately after the head-on impact. Bystanders tried to get the driver out of the Mercedes, but the flames were too intense. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Devin Jarrel McCorkle, did not survive.
They were able to get to the driver of the BMW, who was taken to the hospital.
Sulfur Springs Road was closed for more than two hours as police investigated the crash.
Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash and are still trying to determine if there were any other reasons that caused the driver to cross the centerline.
