Anson County commissioner involved in deadly wrong-way crash

RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — Vancine Sturdivant, 62, has only been on the county commission for about six years, but has spent so much of her life trying to make her county a better place that everyone who heard about the wreck was horrified.

She was on the way to get her hair done Thursday morning when troopers said she was hit head on by a man driving the wrong way on the ramp from highway 74 at exit 306 in Richmond County.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene, where the man who hit her, Robert Little, was killed. Little’s wife, who was flown to CMC, was seriously hurt.

Anna Baucom, who serves with Sturdivant on the county commission, said news of the crash traveled fast.

"I was at a convenience store earlier this morning, and they already knew about it,” Baucom said. "We lift up prayers. We pray for folks."

Michael Freeman is the superintendent of Anson County Schools where Sturdivant volunteers and helps kids get clothes and school supplies.

"All you have to do is ask Miss Vancine about it and she will find a way to support children in Anson County,” Freeman said.

Now, it’s the community's turn to support Sturdivant.

Steve Whitlock, from Lilesville Convenience Store, had a message for her family.

“Just keep the faith, like she always did,” Whitlock said.

Sturdivant was seriously hurt in the crash and taken to a hospital in Chapel Hill.
