CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police had to close down a busy south Charlotte road for hours after a man was killed in a crash overnight.
Officers told Channel 9 that just after midnight, a Volvo station wagon slammed into a utility pole at the intersection of South Tryon Street and Remount Road.

When first responders arrived, they found the driver trapped in the car and had to cut the roof off to get to him.
Paramedics pronounced that person, Jon Guthrie, dead at the scene.
Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt and that speed looked to have been a factor in the crash.
