Fire ruled accidental at SouthPark multimillion-dollar home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than 50 firefighters were busy early Tuesday morning battling an intense two-alarm fire at a multimillion-dollar home in a gated SouthPark neighborhood.

Dozens of emergency crews were called to the home on Old Dairy Lane, near Colony Road and Fairview Road, just before 7 a.m.

The first firefighters on scene reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. The fire was pumping so much smoke it the sky, it actually showed up on Channel 9's Doppler radar.

Officials said nobody was hurt in the fire and that the homeowners were out of town at the time. It took crews nearly an hour to get the fire under control.

The accidental fire was due to an electrical-wiring malfunction and the damage was estimated to be $450,000.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the home and could see smoke and flames smoldering. Much of the home had been extensively damaged from the fire, and firefighters on top of the house were desperately trying to extinguish the flames.

“We went to a second alarm due to the amount of fire and size of house, as well as heat conditions,” said Capt. Dennis Gist, of the Charlotte Fire Department.

Channel 9 checked property records that listed the home's value at $2.5 million.

The home is secluded inside a gated community near the SouthPark Mall.

Despite the devastation, fire crews were able to save several luxury vehicles parked nearby.

"They were able to get some of the cars and salvage some of the cars,” Gist said.
