North Carolina teen says he accidentally shot, killed 15-year-old friend

LILLINGTON, N.C. — Authorities say a 16-year-old boy has told officers he accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old friend at a home in North Carolina.

Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said the teen has been cooperative about the shooting that happened in a one-room building behind a home near Lillington around 1 a.m. Monday.

Coats told media outlets his deputies will present their findings to the district attorney to determine if charges should be filed in Owen Caltagirone's death.

Deputies say they were flagged down by family members and friends who were giving Caltagirone CPR in the back of a pickup truck on the way to the hospital. The teen died from his injuries.

Authorities say Caltagirone was shot once in the chest.

The sheriff did not release the 16-year-old's name.
