'Complete and delete' option would open I-77 lanes without toll charge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new report from the independent company reviewing the Interstate 77 tolls project researched a possible solution that would involve finishing construction of the lanes but getting rid of the toll.

The new option, known as "complete and delete," would have the new lanes open to all drivers without a toll except for heavy trucks.

If the North Carolina Department of Transportation moves forward with this plan, it would lose private funding and be forced to pay compensation to the current investor.

Officials plan to hold open houses for the public to weigh in starting next month before making a decision.
