CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The investigation into Charlotte's 30th homicide is underway, police said.
Officers found Shannon Littlejohn's body in a park Monday morning, just feet away from West Charlotte High School.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they responded to a welfare check around 8 a.m. Monday. Officers arrived to find the woman dead.
Friends told Channel 9 that Littlejohn, 46, was well-known in the neighborhood.
"She was a good girl," said Tonya Hill-Stevenson, who grew up with the victim. "She was unique, but she was my friend."
Hill-Stevenson said Littlejohn was deeply involved in her church, United House of Prayer for All People, on Beatties Ford Road. Friends at the scene Monday said she was at the church until almost midnight Sunday.
"She could sing, she was a singer," Judy Dee said.
Dee said Littlejohn grew up in the neighborhood and was homeless after her mother moved into assisted living. However, neighbors said she would stay with them frequently.
"People take care of her, she was homeless, but she was a very, very good person," Dee said.
The investigation is ongoing.
