Surveillance video captures man crashing into pole after being shot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are trying to find out who killed a man as he sat in his car outside a pawn shop in southeast Charlotte.

Channel 9 has been following developments in the city's 54^th homicide since the shooting happened around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Police responded to the scene, near Monroe Road and Fugate Avenue, again Friday.

Channel 9 anchor Liz Foster learned detectives have received some major help from nearby businesses.

Police received surveillance video from a nearby tire shop.

Cameras were pointed directly at a power pole where the victim crashed after being shot.

Police are hoping the cameras captured clues to help them solve the city’s latest homicide.

Surveillance cameras are on both sides of the street where police said Raymond Johnson III was found shot to death inside his car, just outside of the pawn shop where he worked.

“(I’m) very, very surprised. (I’m) very shocked, very upset, because violence has spilled over into a place I know the victim,” Cassius Alexander said.

Alexander, a coin collector, stopped by the pawn shop on Monroe Road often. That's what brought him to the shop Friday, but he saw a handwritten note on the door that said the shop was closed.

He knew Johnson as "Ray,” a husband and a father.

"He was doing this to support them,” Alexander said.

Officers said someone shot Johnson while he was driving, and then he crashed into a power pole.

By the time police got to the scene, they said he was already dead.

“It's too many killings,” Alexander said.

Raymond Jackson lives nearby and stopped by the crime scene Thursday night to find out what happened.

Police haven't released much information, including whether they have a suspect or know why someone wanted to kill Johnson.

“I hope they catch them because there's too many senseless murders around Charlotte, and it's getting worse,” Jackson said.

Police haven't said how many people they think were involved or released a description of the vehicle the shooter was in.

Nearby residents said they hope the owner of the pawn shop will increase security.
