CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Troopers chase speeding BMW on I-85

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol was involved in a high-speed chase along Interstate 85 that ended just off Interstate 485 in Mint Hill Tuesday morning.

Troopers began the pursuit before 9 a.m. in Cabarrus County and chased the speeding BMW on I-85 in the southbound lanes into Mecklenburg County.

From there, the pursuit continued onto Interstate 485 and ended when the suspect crashed into the guardrail on the Highway 51 bridge over I-485.

Troopers took the driver, Christopher King, into custody.

From the Department of Transportation cameras along I-85, a black car can be seen zipping past traffic while a state trooper gives chase at more than 100 mph.

Authorities said troopers tried to stop King for speeding but he would not pull over, instead, leading them on a high-speed chase.

When King crashed after getting off I-485 on Highway 51, he tried to run away but troopers quickly captured him.

A witness shared video with Channel 9 that showed troopers with their guns drawn, shouting out commands for King to give up.

“When I came outside, I saw someone had crashed into the guardrail. So I, know you, obviously what to see if the person was okay,” the witness said. “Apparently he had got out and ran, but they had the guns drawn on him. It's a little nerve-wracking because you don't know what to expect.”
Sgt. Mark Coyle with NC Highway Patrol said sometimes they don't know what to expect either.
Especially when a chase starts off like a normal traffic stop.

Officials said King will be facing several charges connected to the chase.

Channel 9 also learned King was wanted for armed robbery in Durham and had recently served time in prison.
