CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Area Transit System officials released video that shows a car slamming into the back of a CATS bus.
The collision happened May 8 on West Boulevard near Remount Road.
The video shows riders leaving the bus, and a car slamming into the back.
Police said the woman driving the car, Precious Cunningham, may have been intoxicated at the time of the wreck. She had her two children in the car.
Cunningham didn’t have a driver’s license and was charged with DWI and child abuse.
Family members said that the 7-year-old in the back seat had a broken arm and the 1-year-old had a concussion.
Surveillance video shows Cunningham's car turn onto West Boulevard May 8 and rear end the CATS bus without slowing down.
Bus driver Jonathan Pearson ran to the car and saw two small children inside with fuel spilling out of the car. He ran back to the bus to grab the fire extinguisher.
Cunningham was also cited for expired registration, child seat violations and open container.
Later, she was charged with child abuse in connection with the crash.
A family member, who didn't want to be identified, said she was disappointed to hear about the crash, but she said the kids are doing OK.
"I'm just so grateful that those kids are not hurt real bad, and they can continue on with their life," the woman said.
Another family member is taking care of those children.
CATS officials said Pearson has been recommended for employee of the month for springing into action so quickly.
