CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a man who they said sexually assaulted a young girl for years.
Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit were notified by patrol officers last month about an investigation into a sexual assault involving a 12-year-old girl.
The accuser told officers that Angel Mario Guzman Lobo, 61, forcibly fondled her on multiple occasions in 2014 and 2015.
Detectives discovered that Lobo had a history of moving to different places and renting rooms from people he met. Lobo was renting a room from a family on Reames Road and became a caregiver to children when the assault occurred, police said.
"He would gain their trust through mutual friends, rent a room, he was kind of a transient guy, so he would come from one place to another. When he rents their room he gains their trust, he volunteers to take care of their children and that’s when the assaults occur," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sgt. Jem Jones said.
Detectives determined two children were sexually assaulted during the same time frame but those charges are still forthcoming.
During a news conference Friday, CMPD officers called Lobo and serial child molester who may have victims in three other states. They believe there are victims in Ohio, Maryland and New York.
Jones said the lead detective in the case got Lobo to open up and reveal the other possible attacks.
Police arrested Lobo on Thursday. He is charged with 10 counts of indecent liberties with a child and 10 counts of first-degree sex offense.
